Lesson 76

So what happened in this session…
Today in my rush to get to lesson, i forgot my Grade 3 book, i never forget to bring along my music! Nevertheless il Maestro assures me there are plenty of things to review.. Kreutzer, Vivaldi, Sitt Studies in 2nd Position – the latter mentioned in jest to get a rise out of me i'm sure.
and..
Seasonal music - yes.. Christmas Carols - Silent Night and O Holy Night.

Discovering that my favourite – the Czardas is a Grade 5 piece played in 1st, 2nd, & 3rd Positions, something i am looking forward to learning at some point in the future.

I announce out loud that my 4th finger vibrato sucks and apologise sincerely for my un-lady like language which is brought about only through enormous frustration, to be comforted that worse things have been said by those who have come before me.

A quick review of the Kreutzer 13, which in my opinion has your fingers doing the most incredible contortions i never would have believed if not for trying, leaving me to gasp, “Are you serious?’
Immediately followed by my own realisation below as i look for the denial in His eyes which did not come..
“Hey that’s how it is.. so deal with it!”
Sadly His only retort could be, "I didn't write the darn thing!"

In fine..
Il Maestro wasn’t kidding about commencing Sitt Studies in 2nd Position.. stating only 25% was in jest.

Throw me overboard now!..
Note to self..

aboard the flamed maple ship

Please throw me overboard..
Being aboard this flamed maple ship when the seas are rough can be trying on a fledgling crew with limited experience, and it is in these trying times when one tries to pull it together for the other.
In a strange way, it is comforting to know i am not the only one who experiences the overwhelming sensation of these crests and troughs on an adventure such as this leaving you so uncoordinated you do not know which way is up anymore.
Currently my MSP, Main Support Person on this voyage is taking their turn below deck for feeling such in this moment.
With this said, i dedicate this post to YOU and it is to You that i say..

Just Rest.. Relax.. Decompress.. and remember you are not alone.
Take a moment looking back at what you have already learnt.. remembering for example how we thought two note slurs seemed impossible.. and now we are playing 3, 4 & 5 note slurs.
Each piece that you master will lay the foundation for the next.
Keep in mind the overall picture, but just try to focus on the tasks at hand.

In fine.. constantly struggling with mastering new skills can dampen the enthusiasm for learning anything new and therefore should not be the entire focus of a practice session.
For me personally, i find it important to spend a percentage of that practice time playing what i already know well, (no matter how simple it is) this enjoyment and experience in music reminds and reinforces why it is that i have embarked on this journey in the first place.. and knowing you.. it will help you too.

You have the ability and passion for this
i see it and hear it
 storms are only momentary
and pass as all storms do
until then
stay below deck
rest
recover
and look forward to calm seas

lesson 75

where do i begin...
so much has happened since my last lesson posting which was back in July!

Photography..
The violin continues to be a source of inspiration for my photography, as you can see from the recent uploads here with the series ‘towards resonance’, shot on the 8 November at Avon Dam in the Wollondilly Region of NSW.
The location provided the perfect backdrop not only for this photographic shoot, also for a few hours of practice under the massive Egyptian style gateways that flank each end of the dam structure.

The resonance beneath these concrete canopies as i practiced this day was what sparked the title of this series, and naturally my desire and motivation to move forward towards playing this instrument at a level where it doesn’t have the listener cringe is something i’m striving and working hard for.
The natural bushland surrounds, as well as man made setting provided the inspiration for creativity and together with intuitiveness made for a successful and enjoyable day overall.

I was also employed to do a small photographic assignment to adorn the pages of a new business website.
I was very surprised to have been asked, after all i'm not a professional photographer, however it ties in well here as the subjects are foremost violin coupled with flowers.
I felt honored to be given an opportunity to contribute (in a small way) artistically to something like this, because to date i have been engaged only with fulfilling my own needs facilitating creative expression.
To have someone outline what they would like, is a totally different process, although still in the realm of creativeness, what one person has in their mind as an overall picture, can transfer differently to the other, therein lays the challenge.
The client was extremely happy with the end results, and i was more so being able to help realise their vision. All going well with the launch at some point next year, i will only be too happy to provide links to this new and exciting venture.

after dark
grand reflection

Lessons.. the highlights..
The last 5 months of lessons has seen me progress a little further with Vivaldi Spring, which my Maestro tells me is a piece that students doing their Associate Diploma tackle.. great!
I’m just a humble beginning kindergarten violinist, talk about jumping into the deep end. There is much work to be done before this even sounds anything like it’s meant to – still it is a challenge and will endeavour to keep at it.

Hans Sitt is providing much amusement.. for whom?
I’m not sure.
In a desperate bid to motivate me to read musical notation (something i have publicly confessed to loathing here on the blog) Maestro actually said he would offer me a free one hour lesson, on the house, if i learn in one week to play the Sitt No 6 with no errors in under 4 minutes…
Did i mention the word ‘amusement?’
Perhaps for him - knowing it would be very difficult but not entirely impossible.

Still i told him this was a bet he could not lose, for on hearing this piece i described it as a tongue twister, except for violin.
My initial thoughts were that if by some miracle i could achieve this, it would mean significant inroads into the beginnings of reading music, and despite the odds being greatly stacked in his favour, i have to confess the thought of denying il Maestro payment of an hour lesson was delicious.

Sadly in spite of all the practice i did that week, i did not complete the piece and made many errors along the way especially towards the end.. he was worried there initially for i gave it my best shot.
I am pleased to report however, in the week that followed i persevered with the no 6, saying to myself.. “darn i couldn’t do it in one week, but i’m determined to get it done in two”.. even if it kills me..
So at the next lesson was able to play it all, with a few errors here and there.. but hey.. i got through it!

The last five months has seen me step up into the 3rd Grade Book based on the AMEB Curriculum - having had three lessons to date.
The music in this book has me highly motivated, and although it has only been a few weeks, some serious practice time has been had familiarising myself with the pieces and may i add, a considerable amount of reading going on!

I’m sure there are other things i can make mention of, but they do not come to mind immediately as i write, so for now i will leave it here.
I hope not to desert my blog for this long again.
Sometimes there just isn’t enough time for it all.

growth spiral
violin scroll against maple

'towards resonance'

A scroll is the decoratively carved end of the neck of certain stringed instruments, mainly members of the violin family. The scroll is typically carved in the shape of a volute (a rolled-up spiral) according to a canonical pattern, although some violins are adorned with carved heads, human and animal.
The quality of a scroll is one of the things used to judge the luthier's skill.
Instrument scrolls usually approximate a logarithmic spiral.
Although many references assert that the instrument scroll closely follows the golden spiral (a specific form of the Logarithmic spiral) this assertion is demonstrably false.

Scrollwork is a common feature of Baroque ornament, the period when string instrument design became essentially fixed.

Photography sustains my creative expression together with writing and painting when energy permits.
They are part of my artistic journey.
Sharing a great deal of myself here through different mediums under this thread of music
is also a journey which i will weave into this fabric that ultimately forms me and it will stand as a record.
Some time ago i wrote the words below which i guess best describes why i am at times driven..

lesson 57

I hate Him.. respectfully
I was told and then discovered through listening that Sitt's melody lines do not follow a pattern, which makes memorising a little difficult, which forces one to read the music... lucky me!
Sight reading is what i consider torture.. i believe i stated in lesson that i would rather swallow razor blades!
Well.. this may be a slight exaggeration.

Hans Sitt 100 Studies, Op. 32 Book 1: 20 Studies in 1st Position - numbers 1 & 5.
Numbers 14 & 19 are to be attempted for homework senza referencing on the internet - i promised the Maestro, so i'd best be a good girl.. which will not be a hard thing to do considering i have not attempted this yet and it is almost that time of the week again.

Hans Sitt  21 September 1850, Prague – 10 March 1922, Leipzig
A German violinist, teacher, and composer. During his lifetime, he was regarded as one of the foremost teachers of violin. Most of the orchestras and conservatories of Europe and North America then sported personnel who numbered among his students. He held the august position of Professor of Violin at the Leipzig Conservatory from 1883 on, and authored several important studies for that instrument, some of which are still used.

chocky con il violino blu

Perhaps some would think i actually set the photo up and position my Blue Violin next to my beautiful Burmese boy Chocky.
I can assure you this is not the case!
I often find Chocky resting or asleep beside il Violino Blu and it is i who races about trying to find the camera in order to take the photo.
Perhaps he was a violinist in his former life?

Today marks One Year of Violin!

I started this blog June 22, 2009 to record my journey as donna con il violino blu.
It's been a wonderful experience so far, even with its many ups and downs.. for no journey is without this.

I can't believe how lucky i am to have some wonderful people by my side who enrich this experience for me.
They are all with me in some form, providing me with the positive encouragement i need and they each do this in many ways.

I have not made mentioned thus far here within this blog, that i was very much inspired by a Virtuoso Violinist who shall remain nameless and on meeting with this person last year, and after having played for me, for what was literally a few minutes they re-ignited my desire to seriously consider pursuing this.

I had always wanted to try the violin many years ago, however back then (realistically) i did not have the time to dedicate myself to trying it out, nor the funds at my disposal.. (i'm not too sure if the latter is still the case, as up till now this venture has cost a small fortune and is ongoing).

So on my return home i literally walked into my local music shop and bought myself a violin.

A week later i attended a function, and there we were entertained by 2 musicians, one a piano accordionist and the other a violinist. I approached the lady violinist (Olga) and asked her whether she gave lessons. Much to my disappointment she did not, however she did give me the name of an older gentleman who was a restorer of violins who could perhaps help me out with a few basic things to get me started. The cogs had been set in motion and i felt this was definitely something which has presented itself at the right time.. in my mind i say to myself, this is meant to be.

I immediately set about contacting this older gentleman (Spyros).. he introduced me to my violin. He showed me how to hold Her, explained Her workings and parts, helped me hold the bow, how to apply the rosin as well as showing me many of the books in his collection all to do with the violin.

Spyros and i instantly connected, however he did and still does tell me that i am 'too old to be starting the violin' and learning this instrument should be started when one is aged 5!
That's ok.. i just smile and am thankful for what positive encouragement he gives me by way of his comments when i visit with him at least once a month to play for him.

Olga & Spyros.. Spyros started violin as a young adult after meeting with and being inspired by Olga and her playing the violin on board the boat trip that took one month to come to Australia, for Olga and Spyros both migrated from Romania to start their lives here.
A few months back Olga was kind enough to invite me into her home,  someone she had only met with briefly at a function.  She was very generous to offer up her time to listen to me play and also introduced me to the very beginnings of the Kreutzer No 2.
She also performed Czardas by Monti.. i was left speechless!
There was a moment there when i looked over at Spyros whilst Olga played and he had tears in his eyes.
I had a wonderful day with them both.. it was as though they had opened a window, making me privy to a world they shared in when they were younger and played music together.
I glimpsed momentarily what it was like for them, as they described what life was like on board that ship which took forever to reach this foreign land.. with only the music to lift their spirits.. for the tears i saw in the eyes of this man i know as Spyros as he listened to Olga play Czardas represented the great ocean crossing and memories of a distant time.
Olga and Spyros remain great friends till this day, they do not see each other often but keep in touch regularly via telephone.
For me it was so nice to have my journey in violin link us together, and this day spent in their company, sharing the beautiful music of the violin i will cherish forever.

Getting back to my beginnings here.. Let me make mention that Spyros is a staunch realist, in reminding me each time i visit that i am too old to be learning this instrument - perhaps in view of the limitations he himself faced learning as an older student. Nevertheless after many months of getting to know each other, and hearing my progress on the instrument, he payed me the highest form of encouragement by gifting me one of his personal violins which he has had in his possession for 40 years - i will never forget Him for this very kind, thoughtful and generous gesture and more importantly faith he showed in me to pursue this dream of playing the violin. He placed this His violin into my hands, it is a 'baton' and i will do my best to honour him and be the violinist he always longed to be.
I named his violin 'faith' as all violins should bear a name and whenever i feel like it's all too hard, i remind myself that Spyros has faith in me... and his words to me that i 'am brave' giving this a go.

I still needed a teacher however and a few weeks later during a conversation with a friend Graeme, i reveal that i did something crazy and purchased a violin and am wanting to learn to play it. He tells me that his grand daughter is learning the violin and the conversation goes on. He mentions there is a violin teacher who is attached to one of the restaurants/reception venues he frequents. I make my enquiries and my investigations finally lead me to my Maestro.

Within a few days i am booked in to my first lesson which began Friday 5 June, 2009.

Yesterday when i attended lesson, it just slipped my mind to let Maestro know that i have been coming to him for one year now. Perhaps it was because i felt poorly during lesson and needed to focus all my energy on maintaining concentration and attention to what was being covered.
We spoke about many things all violin, and of course we are focused on moving forward despite not being given anything new to practice, for i believe i already have enough to keep me busy namely..

*Vivaldi Spring in part
*K2 which needs refining
*K9 & K13 has not moved at all from lack of practice
*Grade 2 pieces from the AMEB
*finally a piece from Riverdance

There are those of course who are there no matter what!
My mum and dad constantly ask how i am doing. Initially i had not told them or indeed anyone in my circle about starting violin. My plan was to surprise my father at his 80th birthday and play Happy Birthday for him.. i told my Maestro that i would be satisfied with just being able to cope with that, and this would indeed be an achievement for me also adding if this was all i could do with it, i would be satisfied! I had started June 5 and i had till September 1 to accomplish this. I had found the initial lessons extremely difficult. This instrument felt so foreign to me, even just to hold it in my arms let alone play any recognisable melody. Needless to say September quickly came and i managed to play for my dad, mistakes and all! - He was astonished as were others in my immediate family.
Each time i visit with mum & dad now, it is always with my violin in tow, and no matter how terrible i sound, to them it all sounds wonderful!

There have been many others who have touched my journey here up till now, and they are with me in their own special way offering support.
Whether it be via a face to face conversation or yelling at me from over the back fence.
Discussing progress or lack thereof and its difficulties with another beginning older student over a coffee before lesson, or simply receiving comments here over the internet by someone, unknown to me, that has simply taken some time to read and respond.
A neighbour, who as we water our gardens, makes mention that i have improved , to having someone watch and listen via skype who is on the other side of the world.
Even those that go out of their way telling me they despise the sound of 'the thing' and would like nothing better than to either set the 'DARN THING' on fire or throw it under the wheels of an oncoming semi-trailer, to watching the Rottweiler nextdoor head for his kennel when i start practice - it's all good!

I remember being told - you need a good sense of humour to learn the violin, for in the beginning which is where i am, it truly is a vile-in!

One year has passed.. i can say it has been nice to spend some time here telling of my beginnings.
Who would have thought that 12 months down the track i would be in possession of not one violin but four!
Who knows what other surprises are in store for donna con il violino blu

a presto
e sempre
dal cuore
