lesson 41

I’ve had two lessons this week..
One comprising of an hour earlier in the week and today’s lesson a quick half hour session completing the review of Rudolphe’s Number 2.

This is indeed exciting, for now i can crank up the practice sessions with the Study now complete in my head - that is energy permitting due to my chronic fatigue.

A few intense practice sessions this week so far has seen a small breakthrough with thumb placement and that ‘death grip’ and also position changes, the latter still very rough.
Overall the piece seems to be a little more in tune as this small adjustment has made some difference with getting my fourth finger to fall in the right place - there is much work to be done however, and Maestro has told me this is a huge jump (!!!) from the 2nd Grade pieces i was playing. It is what i want to try and the will is there so we are working hard at achieving this together.

Yesterday during practice, the neighbour behind me yelled out.. ‘Use the force!’I don’t speak to these people at all.. so i was a little shocked to hear this man’s booming voice through the open window of my bathroom.. for this is where i practice most times.
Why the bathroom you ask?.. well.. the sound of the violin resonates beautifully in fully tiled areas i found.

Well perhaps it will sound beautiful one day.. for although the sound reverberates about me.. it can be horrid as i fumble and stumble my way through this very difficult piece, and with the window open i guess others within range can hear it also in all its glory!!

At least he yelled out something encouraging rather than some profanity..

See there is hope after all..

The 42 études ou caprices ("42 études or capriccios") for solo violin were composed by Rodolphe Kreutzer around 1796.
Although Kreutzer was a prolific composer with some 50 stage works and dozens of other pieces to his credit, the 42 études remain his best known work and today are part of standard teaching repertoire.

The earliest extant edition of the collection, from 1807, comprises 40 pieces. Kreutzer's authorship is broadly accepted for two other études that were included in some early editions. One of Kreutzer's most important didactic goals was developing fluency in contraction and extension of the left hand; thus his pieces anticipate the challenges of the modern violin.

Kreutzer 2 bars 19 -21

lesson 40

the Kreutzer continues..

Today we pushed on getting a little further with reviewing bars 19 – 21 in Rudolphe’s Number 2
________________________

My hand is still locked about the neck of the violin which we have dubbed ‘the death grip’ !
You can fly a flag off the top of my thumb!

My fourth finger will not stretch because of ‘death grip’ and thumb placement or lack thereof!

I keep guessing at position changes rather than employing glissando to find the note.

Insomma.. - e` un disastro!

They say.. things often get worse before they get better – let us hope and pray. Honestly i know it's early days and on the positive side i am doing ok for someone who has only just started violin.
It was noticed i said ‘Jesus’ a lot today.. hope He didn’t mind my calling out so many times.. Maestro said that perhaps i am best calling out for the devil - funny!

Then relayed an interesting story..
I love it when he reveals titbits about History of Violin, breaking the tension of lesson, for there is much between the three of us at the moment, Maestro, Rudolphe and me!
He told of Tartini, and the Devil’s Trill Sonata. This, his most famous sonata was composed after he dreamt of the devil appearing at the foot of his bed playing the violin.

He also told me that Tartini lived in the time of Antonio Stradivari and that he was the first owner of a violin made by the now famous Italian luthier in 1715.*

* I would like to make a correction here after Anon was so kind to leave a comment on this post Re Tartini stating he wasn't the first owner of a Stradivarius - he was the first owner of the 1715 "Lipinski Stradivarius" as per Wikipedia.. many thanks to you! :)

lesson 39

Time for a lesson update..

Lessons have been upped to one hour now!

I felt the need to increase my time with Maestro, as the previous half hour sessions would be over in the blink of an eye - just time to take the instrument out of its case, do a DAGE-G.. a scale, one technical exercise perhaps, starting or revision of a piece from the 2nd Grade AMEB curriculum.. i was finding that just as i was getting comfortable re; playing in front of him, for i still get very anxious, it would be time to pack up.

I have mixed feelings about increasing lesson time, because since doing so some four weeks ago, i have not capitalised on this precious tuition - as i am not practicing nearly enough as i would like.. my head space and heart are struggling.. this is therefore compounding the distress i am feeling at present with the violin.

Still i am trying my best.

Perhaps i am also making it doubly hard for myself.. as 2 weeks ago i made mention of Kreutzer and asked Maestro when i could start cutting my teeth into this?

It was really a throw away question.. one which i expected him to laugh off.. instead.. he asked me whether i had the book of 42 Studies to which i replied yes.

He asked me to bring it along next time to lesson..

This is what i have been struggling with for the last 2 weeks.. i'm finding it a challenge to say the very least.. going from Grade 2 to this!
I remarked, "This may as well be Mount Everest for me..!"
To which he replied, "Nah!.. perhaps just Mount Kosciuszko!"

Well i'm in the thick of it now it seems.. Is there a base camp 1 on Mt Kosciuszko ?

Yesterday during my practice session at home in preparation for today's lesson i sent Maestro this sms as follows...

"I wish i was in SPACE.. for in SPACE no one can hear you SCREAM!
I am struggling with this Number 2.. that's playing, not doing!"

___________________

I know he has a great sense of humour.. lucky for this, as i was told once, this is indeed needed for violin!

Today we inched a little further through this Kreutzer Study Number 2.. Maestro knows i am determined, for when he played this piece for me, i knew instantly this is the sound of the violin that i love, i can't verbalise what i feel when i hear these melody lines.. i do know however within my core being.. it's what i want to be able to do.. despite the struggle at the moment.

Rodolphe Kreutzer (16 November 1766 – 6 January 1831) was a French violinist, teacher, conductor, and composer of forty French operas.

Kreutzer was well known for his style of bowing, his splendid tone, and the clearness of his execution. His compositions include nineteen violin concertos and forty operas. His best known works, however, are the 42 études ou caprices (1796), which are fundamental pedagogic studies.

donna con il violino blu
lady with the blue violin
__________

Why do i call myself by this title?
Well it all started with an artwork.
The one you see as my avatar.

My artistic journey via watercolours has led me to this place which i call.. ‘the beautiful music of the violin’
It was the first watercolour i painted in my other journey through art which is part of a series called

Through this humbly and simply painted artwork, which has become my avatar here, i discover that i adopt the title, 'donna con il violin blu', which is the Italian for lady with the blu violin after having acquired a blue violin shortly after deciding to take steps in learning how to play.
___________

The blue violin is one of four violins that i have in my care. I happened to find it by chance walking past a small suburban music shop. I was not looking for another violin to purchase as i already had bought a violin in order to start learning, rather would like to think that this blue violin found me.

This small music shop was crammed with musical instruments and paraphernalia as most musical shops are. As i stepped in, i immediately headed for the back, deeper and deeper into what seemed a darker and ever narrowing space. My eyes caught that familiar shaped case holding what was a blue coloured violin. Being dark back there, the blue coloured varnish of the instrument seemed to jump out at me.

Even at a reduced price, it seemed this little blue violin was not wanted. It had been cast and thrown aside on the floor along with other instruments laying there way back in the dark crammed space. Although i had already purchased a violin a month before, when i laid eyes on this little blue jewel, i knew instantly i had to have it in my care.

___________

this violin is not a concert violin
it does not have a fancy name or title
it is not prestigious
it does not posses a virtuous voice
but it still has
a heart
and within its body
its heart just wants to be loved
il violino blu
is somewhat like me

________

The further i venture down this road of music and discover how marvellous the voice of the violin truly is, the more am convinced this was meant to be.
Just as i was guided to this music shop by some Divine power, for i never really travel about much,
in finding my heart through il violino blu, some extremely special people it seems, are also being thrown in my path.

“Here.. look!”.. the Universe says, the Universe is providing you with these Stars..
and Stars they are!

There have been some wonderful people, stars that shine brightly, who inspire, guide, gift and love me through this from the very moment i started.
My mother firstly for inspiring me and for always encouraging me no matter what i chose to do.

These people, like the stars in the Heavens are always there for you, shining brightly especially in dark
for that’s their role.

To Them i now say this..
You all know who your are, thank you dal cuore, from my heart for your support so far.

lesson 29

There are many things that have happened since my last posting here
at some stage i will have to catch up.

A chat on skype last night has prompted this post today.

There have been a few very extraordinary people who i have encountered on this violin voyage, each making their own special contribution in helping me, and i make mention of another here now.

My support person and friend Sergio, who is also a mature beginner in violin, is someone who has recently come into my life, as recently as the violin itself.
he struggles as i do with the instrument, however our passion to master it, is one which ties us.

Each week we have what i have termed, a VICC - Violin International Conference Call over the internet air waves via skype as he is from the tiny island of Malta.

He takes out his notes which he makes during the week 'to prepare' as well as his violin and very patiently and methodically reasons his way through scales and other theory.

We exchange music although due to my lack of computer skills it is rather onesided and it is he who is always sending me music.
We also take it in turn to play for each other to encourage and to hear how we are progressing.

He does not read music but is learning very quickly as he is astute, even learning without a teacher when he first began - which i think is an amazing achievement, i on the other can manage a little, but would rather just play by ear..

Last night i did this for him over skype, i had practiced for a few hours beforehand, a song which reminded me of the dances i used to attend with my parents as a child. This song also happens to be on the cd my maestro launched last week.
the song is Besame Mucho.. which in spanish i believe means kiss me a lot or very much.

Anyhow... i played this adlibbing over the skype exchange after having been inspired by maestro's rendition.

Sergio had replied after i had finished - i do not know how to do that.. play by ear.

The words in reply are those written up top.. faith

Thank you sergio for having faith
i have faith in you
and
ps.. i was told today,
when you find a white feather at your feet,
an Angel watches over you

lesson 22
i must be crazy..
taking up the violin at this late stage in life - and have been told so - that's ok...
I'm having fun despite it being a challenge and my maestro is patient and kind and hasn't whacked me over the head with the instrument - this is a positive sign me thinks :) Well maestro tells me he wouldn't be using the instrument in anycase! ;)
This piece is the one i have the most fun playing and as this is my very first video and YouTube upload so i wanted to keep it short.. not knowing how it would come out :) I am also trying very hard not to look at the violin when playing!
This violin is the third i have acquired since starting 22 weeks ago.
It was gifted to me from Spyros Vretos (82 years of age) it has been in his possession since 1970 when he bought it from the Music Distributors Australia in Artarmon Sydney.
Spyros has given away many violins which he has bought and restored during his life, and he too started learning to play the violin as an older student after being inspired by a lady violinist on the boat out to Australia when he migrated.
I feel humbled, privileged and very honored that he has given me this very beautiful violin as a gift.
Spyros, thank you for having faith, for allowing a stranger into your home when i was searching for a teacher, for first introducing me to my violin.
Your gift is treasured, and your extreme generosity always remembered.

lesson 13

grade 1 to concert

Lesson always starts with this question..
of practice?
Stating clearly it was disappointing, a week where i did not practice much.

So as the instrument and books were unpacked from the case, the lesson begins..
Maestro takes the Technical Workbook from me, places it onto the music stand and asks to hear the Position Shift exercise in G Major.

I embarrassedly confess the non practice as this Grade 2 exercise was just too overwhelming, and after the ‘ee-aw’ incident last week, was simply put off! There was no practice from the Technical Workbook this week!
So i begged for Maestro to demonstrate this for me again – he laughs and says he doesn’t want to perform for me.

It’s an exciting week however, as it will be the first time we look pieces in the Grade 1 book.

Maestro takes this book and starts to flick through its pages.
I assume he does this because he has come to know that the pieces i try usually have notes in pencil denoting bow direction to facilitate string crossings and other reminders to myself scrawled on the page, this time i purposefully did not mark any of the pieces i tried.. and this week i tried them all!

He asks if i had looked at any of the pieces..
My reply to him was, “What do you think?”
He replies with a punctuated Yes as he continues to flick through the pages.
Then he asks, “Have you tried many?”
I delight in the repartee, “What do you think?”
He secretly knows the answer to this also and concludes saying, “You have tried all of them and you said you didn’t practice?” (insert big grin)

I did try most of the pieces and have an idea how they go.
So i played the beginning bars of a few (to spare him the agony) just to make sure i had the right idea and had him help with bowing in some. There was much demonstrating- he calls it performing, and even joined in with me while i played List A No 3 The Bee by Stephen Chin, which was cool!

I had a terrible week on some fronts, but today made up for it, by the end of class I was feeling ok.

_______________________
Maestro was also holding a Dinner/Concert beginning at 7.30pm the evening of the same day as lessons. The young lady with the purple violin happened to have a spare ticket, so asked if i would like to come along.

I delighted in joining her and we both had a wonderful night last night, providing a great opportunity to watch Maestro really performing and the ladies with the coloured violins getting to know each other a little more.
________________________
Thank you Lisa!
I had a wonderful night, delighting in your stories. In particular hearing about your own class antics with Maestro! I laughed like crazy on hearing that you bash him with your music book and pat his purple velvet jacket!
Your kindness and generosity will always be remembered.

lesson 12
Practice and a watercolour violin..
I was really stuck for a title for this work however as i began painting in the strings i thought..
G D A E - notes on a violin.

Of course.. what better title, as lessons always begin with what maestro calls 'the daggy G!'

Playing open strings beginning with the D followed by A then G down to E and finally G, hence DAG - E - G = daggy - G
Cute!

I've a quiet respect for the DAG - E - G, and see the merit in playing this sequence of open notes on the violin, however maestro would like me to play this without looking at the instrument, therefore the lesson always starts with me whinging about wanting to look, this and playing with the practice mute!

Perhaps one day i will be able to without the whine - this will indeed be an achievement!

This lesson was encouraging.. i am moving on from the Preliminary Grade Book, so on to the First Grade pieces i go - very exciting.. new music to facilitate cracking the sound barrier!

Today also sees me sliding from first position to third position in some of the technical exercises.. it is a challenge, and there was much laughing, only because of the well chosen words the maestro used to describe this a few weeks ago!

In his words.. "try not to let it sound like a donkey!"

So in trying this exercise from the so called Technical Work Book, all i could think about was this comment! Which incited riotous laughing from us both when i reminded him - i told maestro that he should be very careful with these word/sound/ picture/associations.. very distracting albeit the truth!

That D note on the A string followed by the open D in this 'matching octaves with smooth slurs' exercise.. played by a beginner such as myself.. well.. ahem..
is very ee-aw!
hope you have enjoyed 'notes on a violin'
a presto!

relax.. relax.. relax..

caffe` corretto, a chat, & coloured violins!

macchiato
pencil sketch

lesson 11
Most times i get to class early..
i go into a spare room and get in some practice before seeing Maestro and sometimes i will simply sit outside The Room trying to relax as i get very anxious having to play in front of anyone!

I can hear the faint sounds the student before me makes on her violin. Funnily enough she is playing the same songs as i am.. so my curiosity peaks.

Each week the same Young Lady before me smiles as she leaves The Room i enter.

A couple of weeks ago, as we passed each other, she commented on the vintage brooch i was wearing, which held my fur stole together, as i thanked her i promptly introduced myself. Subsequent short conversations which have transpired since then, as we pass each other, have revealed she is also a beginning student and started almost the same time i did, thus explaining the same musical repertoire!
I’ve experienced many synchronicities of late and this one is no exception and is quite incredible.
It seems we have many things in common..
A desire to play the violin.. a love of vintage.. and our professional backgrounds also.. and other things!

This week had us both waiting for Maestro, who at times runs late, so this gave us more of an opportunity to chat before lesson.

stop!....

Perhaps now i should describe the place were we have lessons..
It's no boring school like institution with porridge coloured walls and dark hallways, instead Maestro holds class in one of the many rooms which are a part of an historic building of early colonial heritage now housing a restaurant, open everyday for lunch & dinner as well as a reception lounge very popular for weddings.
Here people can sit and enjoy a meal on the open veranda which overlooks a sunny courtyard all beautifully framed by an old grape vine.. The Room runs off this veranda! I am horrified to think these people who are having a relaxing lunch have to endure the sounds of beginning students - i am somewhat comforted and have confidence however in traditional building methods.. the walls of this old colonial circa 1799 are thick!

So my new found friend and i, sat patiently and happily on a bench in this sunny courtyard waiting for time with Maestro.

The Waiter, always greets us with a friendly smile, knowing full well we are here for the violin lessons and not for the restaurant. On this occasion he offered us a coffee while we waited ‘on the Maestro’, we naturally accepted albeit a little stupefied!
so over a macchiato and flat white.. we discussed violins..

Practice is always an issue as adults.. we have so much more to contend with than children, and therefore find it hard to dedicate adequate amounts of time to learning something new.
Then there is the noise factor with learning to play a musical instrument, and the vile sounds a violin can make when beginning can be especially grating - nails on a chalk board is nothing compared to this!
Now here is where chatting is of great benefit, as sharing information can be enlightening!
i asked if she had bought herself a ‘practice mute’ - a small device made of rubber which quiets the violin, so as not to disturb the neighbours and anyone who is unfortunate enough to find themselves within a 100m radius, however still loud enough for you to hear what you are playing.
i then added that i practice in my walk-in-wardrobe for added insulation ( i knew all those clothes would come in handy for something). We both laughed loudly and the young lady thought it a brilliant idea as she lives in a unit complex.

i then tell her maestro does not want me to look at the violin while i play… and has even taken on occasion to holding a book up between my face and the instrument! i know this is a good thing.. as playing the violin is much about making it sing as one would when using your voice. Maestro says that you can’t see your vocal chords and this is the same thing – so you don’t need to look! So in trying to solve this dilema of desperately wanting to look..
i practice with the mute.. in the closet.. with the lights off!!
This caused her to laugh hysterically as she could see the method in my madness!

anyway back to the chat… sipping on our coffee and enjoying the winter sun we continue to discuss violins..

i open my case to show the young lady the practice mute and how it is fitted to the bridge of the instrument. She remarks on my beautiful violin and how it looks like ‘an adult violin’ unlike hers where she states looks like ‘a child’s violin’! At this point i am bemused and ask why she feels this way about her violin.. from the size of her case, it looks to me to be a full size violin..
as she opens her case i am astonished.. open mouthed i am looking at a purple coloured violin!
i just had to tell her!

a few weeks after buying my beautiful violin whilst on the hunt for the books i needed to start lessons.. i walked into this music shop i happened to drive by. Way in the back of this dark shop crammed with musical instruments and equipment was a blue violin!
i just had to have it!
it was a sign!
this is my blue violin... it is meant to be mine!

i have a beautiful violin.. but was compelled to buy this one!
so i did!
it turned out to be a very good thing.
My beautiful violin needed to have some adjustments made namely the 'E' string lowered as it was sitting too high off the fingerboard and the pegs shaved so that their ends sat flush in the peg box and also because they were too stiff and would not turn easily. This meant i would be without the instrument for a few weeks while the work was completed and would make practice impossible – i’m not very good at air violin!
a spare violin would be great!.. a spare blue violin!
so again.. back to the chat..

here now..
were two ladies,
relaxing.. sipping coffee now..
discussing coloured violins..
one purple..
one blue!
at this point maestro walks over, dressed in his three piece suit looking dapper but worried.. and so he should be.. he finds himself teaching the ladies with the coloured violins and they are sitting together collaborating and exchanging tales over a macchiato and latte - so funny!
caffe` probably isn't a good thing becasue it is a stimulant.. and we really should be having something which will help us relax before the lesson!
maestro glances at his watch and collects the young lady and just before they disappear into the room i suggest that we need to make it a caffe` corretto next time, adding a good measure of grappa so as to help us with our bowing arm and in particular my up bow staccato!
that or a botox injection into my hand!
relax.. relax.. relax..

getting to know you

quick pencil sketch

________________________

lesson 10

This week sees my return to art as well as practicing my new piece..
Minuet
Johann Sebastian Bach
(1685 - 1750)
List B No3 AMEB Preliminary Grade Series 8

This is my third piece i've learnt and am currently practicing from this book.
My wonderful teacher, who i will refer to as Maestro (a brilliant violinist) has made this one a little more challenging for me.. as if it isn't challenging enough (!!!) adding up bow staccato to the piece making it more expressive and also to expose me to more bowing techniques - eek!

After having practiced for a solid two hours on this today, i then sat down with my violin on the lounge, took out my sketch pad and relaxed making a quick loose pencil sketch of it.

I feel the title for this art work is apt, as it is very much the case at the moment.
I am hoping that my return to music will help me with my art and vice versa.

So with this said and written, it is off to practice and to be inspired.

lesson 4
Let's face reality..
I am old for a 'beginning student'.

I was also told recently that in learning to play the violin one requires a good sense of humour.
I've had four lessons so far, each week these have been booked!
I am enjoying the challenge and the laughs.
I've always wanted to learn/try the violin and the opportunity has presented itself to me now (albeit later in life) coupled with the motivation.

I am under no illusions and know full well that it will be hard and am prepared to go as far as i can in my capacity.

Below are some of the positives experienced so far, remembering that it is very early days!

____________________

My teacher, so far, seems patient and kind
and hasn't bashed me over the head with the instrument yet!
this makes me hopeful!

The neighbours Rottweiler heads for his kennel when i practice!
this makes me laugh out loudly!

When i am not making a hideous screeching sound
(which is often)
and instead feel the vibrations under my chin because
on that odd occassion have hit that 'sweet spot' on the string!
this makes my heart skip a beat.

week 3
i have bought a beautiful violin

i am considered
'old'
to be learning the violin.

I've started this blog diary of sorts to document this musical journey.
every journey starts with a desire to take a step in a direction never navigated.
I'm filled with great excitement as well as trepidation.
________________

i have bought a beautiful violin
which i take with me on this path
i am considered
'old'
to be learning the violin.

few know of this journey
so if you have happened to stumble across this blog
and have or can spare any words of encouragement
i would appreciate them greatly

i have bought this beautiful violin.
i am told
'you're old'
to be learning the violin

to my way of thinking
only when i am
'gone'
will it be too late
'to learn'
the violin
or indeed anything

i have bought a beautiful violin
