the cat and the fiddle
chocky con il violino blu

Perhaps some would think i actually set the photo up and position my Blue Violin next to my beautiful Burmese boy Chocky.
I can assure you this is not the case!
I often find Chocky resting or asleep beside il Violino Blu and it is i who races about trying to find the camera in order to take the photo.
Perhaps he was a violinist in his former life?

Today marks One Year of Violin!

I started this blog June 22, 2009 to record my journey as donna con il violino blu.
It's been a wonderful experience so far, even with its many ups and downs.. for no journey is without this.

I can't believe how lucky i am to have some wonderful people by my side who enrich this experience for me.
They are all with me in some form, providing me with the positive encouragement i need and they each do this in many ways.

I have not made mentioned thus far here within this blog, that i was very much inspired by a Virtuoso Violinist who shall remain nameless and on meeting with this person last year, and after having played for me, for what was literally a few minutes they re-ignited my desire to seriously consider pursuing this.

I had always wanted to try the violin many years ago, however back then (realistically) i did not have the time to dedicate myself to trying it out, nor the funds at my disposal.. (i'm not too sure if the latter is still the case, as up till now this venture has cost a small fortune and is ongoing).

So on my return home i literally walked into my local music shop and bought myself a violin.

A week later i attended a function, and there we were entertained by 2 musicians, one a piano accordionist and the other a violinist. I approached the lady violinist (Olga) and asked her whether she gave lessons. Much to my disappointment she did not, however she did give me the name of an older gentleman who was a restorer of violins who could perhaps help me out with a few basic things to get me started. The cogs had been set in motion and i felt this was definitely something which has presented itself at the right time.. in my mind i say to myself, this is meant to be.

I immediately set about contacting this older gentleman (Spyros).. he introduced me to my violin. He showed me how to hold Her, explained Her workings and parts, helped me hold the bow, how to apply the rosin as well as showing me many of the books in his collection all to do with the violin.

Spyros and i instantly connected, however he did and still does tell me that i am 'too old to be starting the violin' and learning this instrument should be started when one is aged 5!
That's ok.. i just smile and am thankful for what positive encouragement he gives me by way of his comments when i visit with him at least once a month to play for him.

Olga & Spyros.. Spyros started violin as a young adult after meeting with and being inspired by Olga and her playing the violin on board the boat trip that took one month to come to Australia, for Olga and Spyros both migrated from Romania to start their lives here.
A few months back Olga was kind enough to invite me into her home,  someone she had only met with briefly at a function.  She was very generous to offer up her time to listen to me play and also introduced me to the very beginnings of the Kreutzer No 2.
She also performed Czardas by Monti.. i was left speechless!
There was a moment there when i looked over at Spyros whilst Olga played and he had tears in his eyes.
I had a wonderful day with them both.. it was as though they had opened a window, making me privy to a world they shared in when they were younger and played music together.
I glimpsed momentarily what it was like for them, as they described what life was like on board that ship which took forever to reach this foreign land.. with only the music to lift their spirits.. for the tears i saw in the eyes of this man i know as Spyros as he listened to Olga play Czardas represented the great ocean crossing and memories of a distant time.
Olga and Spyros remain great friends till this day, they do not see each other often but keep in touch regularly via telephone.
For me it was so nice to have my journey in violin link us together, and this day spent in their company, sharing the beautiful music of the violin i will cherish forever.

Getting back to my beginnings here.. Let me make mention that Spyros is a staunch realist, in reminding me each time i visit that i am too old to be learning this instrument - perhaps in view of the limitations he himself faced learning as an older student. Nevertheless after many months of getting to know each other, and hearing my progress on the instrument, he payed me the highest form of encouragement by gifting me one of his personal violins which he has had in his possession for 40 years - i will never forget Him for this very kind, thoughtful and generous gesture and more importantly faith he showed in me to pursue this dream of playing the violin. He placed this His violin into my hands, it is a 'baton' and i will do my best to honour him and be the violinist he always longed to be.
I named his violin 'faith' as all violins should bear a name and whenever i feel like it's all too hard, i remind myself that Spyros has faith in me... and his words to me that i 'am brave' giving this a go.

I still needed a teacher however and a few weeks later during a conversation with a friend Graeme, i reveal that i did something crazy and purchased a violin and am wanting to learn to play it. He tells me that his grand daughter is learning the violin and the conversation goes on. He mentions there is a violin teacher who is attached to one of the restaurants/reception venues he frequents. I make my enquiries and my investigations finally lead me to my Maestro.

Within a few days i am booked in to my first lesson which began Friday 5 June, 2009.

Yesterday when i attended lesson, it just slipped my mind to let Maestro know that i have been coming to him for one year now. Perhaps it was because i felt poorly during lesson and needed to focus all my energy on maintaining concentration and attention to what was being covered.
We spoke about many things all violin, and of course we are focused on moving forward despite not being given anything new to practice, for i believe i already have enough to keep me busy namely..

*Vivaldi Spring in part
*K2 which needs refining
*K9 & K13 has not moved at all from lack of practice
*Grade 2 pieces from the AMEB
*finally a piece from Riverdance

There are those of course who are there no matter what!
My mum and dad constantly ask how i am doing. Initially i had not told them or indeed anyone in my circle about starting violin. My plan was to surprise my father at his 80th birthday and play Happy Birthday for him.. i told my Maestro that i would be satisfied with just being able to cope with that, and this would indeed be an achievement for me also adding if this was all i could do with it, i would be satisfied! I had started June 5 and i had till September 1 to accomplish this. I had found the initial lessons extremely difficult. This instrument felt so foreign to me, even just to hold it in my arms let alone play any recognisable melody. Needless to say September quickly came and i managed to play for my dad, mistakes and all! - He was astonished as were others in my immediate family.
Each time i visit with mum & dad now, it is always with my violin in tow, and no matter how terrible i sound, to them it all sounds wonderful!

There have been many others who have touched my journey here up till now, and they are with me in their own special way offering support.
Whether it be via a face to face conversation or yelling at me from over the back fence.
Discussing progress or lack thereof and its difficulties with another beginning older student over a coffee before lesson, or simply receiving comments here over the internet by someone, unknown to me, that has simply taken some time to read and respond.
A neighbour, who as we water our gardens, makes mention that i have improved , to having someone watch and listen via skype who is on the other side of the world.
Even those that go out of their way telling me they despise the sound of 'the thing' and would like nothing better than to either set the 'DARN THING' on fire or throw it under the wheels of an oncoming semi-trailer, to watching the Rottweiler nextdoor head for his kennel when i start practice - it's all good!

I remember being told - you need a good sense of humour to learn the violin, for in the beginning which is where i am, it truly is a vile-in!

One year has passed.. i can say it has been nice to spend some time here telling of my beginnings.
Who would have thought that 12 months down the track i would be in possession of not one violin but four!
Who knows what other surprises are in store for donna con il violino blu

a presto
e sempre
dal cuore

Le Quattro Stagione
The Four Seasons

Le Quattro Stagioni is a set of four violin concertos by Antonio Vivaldi.
Composed in 1723, The Four Seasons is Vivaldi's best-known work, and is among the most popular pieces of Baroque music.

The texture of each concerto is varied, each resembling its respective season.

The concertos were first published in 1725 as part of a set of twelve concerti, Vivaldi's Op. 8, entitled Il cimento dell'armonia e dell'inventione - The Contest between Harmony and Invention.

The first four concertos were designated Le quattro stagioni, each being named after a season.

Each one is in three movements, with a slow movement between two faster ones.

I do understand why i have uploaded one of my past watercolour works here, but i am not yet wanting to be entirely open about ALL that is bearing down on me at present except perhaps to state one..
My blog here as donna con il violino blu, as well as the many other blogs i have are journals, and they are a record to stand that i once existed, as there is no one to come after me.
I feel compelled to leave part of me behind in this way.
I have done this over the last three years through painting, photography, through my poetry, through writing.. in any way i can and in the only way i know how to do and i do this with my heart, soul and entire being.
Now MUSICALLY here through the violin and all the inspiration that comes from my experiences with it, i go about hoping i can record it ALL for it is important to me that i do this.

do you really see me

I struggle from many spheres and try to comprehend what is happening within my world which has bought about much frustration, sadness and emotional pain and is affecting my very essence and therefore impacting on my journey here through the beautiful music of the violin.

It's also important that i record all the support offered in its many forms, be it from those who know me well, or don't know me except for what they see as they just pass by here.. those that are here long term on the journey or here for only a short time to share.
Therefore my watercolour work featured above titled do you really see me asks a question of the viewer.
One such viewer on visiting my blog a few days ago offered their kind thoughts which went some way as to providing me with some light on what was a very dark weekend for me.

I am doing my best to keep focused.. on track.. to look further down the road with playing my violin but i am having great trouble am feeling fragile and have not yet picked up my heart.

This person is not known to me, however they took some time to read through my blog and respond.
They offered sincerity not cynicism, warmth not coldness, they opted to communicate and not have me feel isolation, they did so willingly without expecting anything in return and without knowing my circumstance except for what they have read, seen & sensed here.
Although i provided the link to this site, i simply said they would be welcome to visit, not knowing that they had .. i did not ask for a response however a response i received and one which was timely for the way i am  feeling in this moment and no doubt will feel for a while to come.
They gave of their time and in doing so they gave of themselves.
I post it below so it too is threaded and woven into this journey.
I will no doubt read the words over and over and have it remind me that when one door seems closed another opens out to let in light and air.
Philcmiller, as i only know you by this name
i thank you
dal cuore

When you sent me an invitation to your blog I went to it and studied your words, paintings, photographs, and the quality of the blog itself. Perugina, your blog reveals the heart of a truly classy individual.

Though you never mention the specifics of your current emotional struggles, your omission of the specifics is part of the excellence of the blog.
Anyone of any significant age and experience knows what it means to have their heart and soul ground to powder and blown to the wind.

One need not rationalize the specifics. That part of the story can be fully grasped only through the life-experience of the individual. All your friends need to know is that though your former heart may have perished, the physical body did not, so some new heart must grow within the hollow shell. A new you with new dreams is being born.

Your blog graphically shows us the foundation upon which you are rebuilding; your art, your dreams of mastering the violin, and your poetic writings.
Perugina, I wish you the very very best in this effort. I am 53 years old and have survived two tragedies that few would be able to identify with. Not only did I survive, but each new heart was richer and more beautiful than the last. Of course, regenerated beauty cannot be comprehended by all, only by those to whom the gift is given.

Lastly, your blog does not give us any clues as to the day to day substance of your existence. What it shows us is your own concept of yourself, your sense of self-worth, and your vision of the beauty you have to offer the world if it will only stop and look.
You paint yourself as several beautiful women that you know live within you, you photograph yourself as the lover and protector of your instrument, adoring it as you guard it, just as a mother with her child or a God with his creation.

You reveal your sensuality through the flow of lines rather than through the less-dignified over-exposure of your body (as several on RedBubble are prone to do).

As I put down a last word, I want the budding new heart within you to know that one more person in the world was completely captivated by that portion of you that radiates beauty, dignity and a haunting grace.

As you live your life through your common days as a regular woman enduring the inevitable realities of being a struggling human being, please know that the Perugina you know lives within you is a powerful and captivating woman.

You have chosen to reveal this magnificent woman to any who will stop, look, read, and think.
Those who have taken the time to do so will not be able to soon forget you.
Grow and develop, Perugina…you are a beautiful child becoming a beautiful woman.

Hold your violin when you cry.

My view is heavily obscured and there seems to be no blue sky in sight,

_________________________________________________________

I have four violins and i have not had the emotional strength or physical strength
to play any of them the last two weeks.
To hear their beautiful sounds.
This has left me greatly saddened beyond words can express.
I near my first year anniversary with learning violin
and i fear that i will not be able to continue as my present state is making it difficult.
An already tenuous thread does not need the sharpest of swords to sever it.
Looking back however, i see how far i have come, not knowing how to even hold them in my arms let alone to make them sound.. so i can be proud of myself in this regard and know that i really gave it my all with all the love i had and still have in my heart.

I keep this blog open to give me hope and faith, and i pray that i can yank myself out of this, at least on an emotional level (for emotionally i am shattered), this would help me greatly at least to push through my chronic fatigue due to other health issues and muster the little enthusiasm to practice and at least move in a forward direction.
I’ve missed out on two lessons since feeling this way and this in itself has pained me.

I casually mentioned that i may leave violin to Maestro last lesson, trying to hide my state..
i was so sick that i found it hard to stand whilst having my lesson..

he replied

You do not leave violin
the violin leaves you
for it will go on
long after you/we have gone
and it will always find another

______________
with a heavy heart
i can't imagine my violino blu in any other hands
please give me the strength and courage God to go on

lesson 45

Stop.. rewind.. play..

There is a bigger picture to keep in mind.. i’m told everything is on track..

Scales
G Major – I position – 2 octaves
C# Major - III position starting with 2nd finger – 2 octaves

Maestro assures me, ‘The assault on His fine musical ears’* also known as K9 as played by me, for it is this bad.. (*mind you these are my words not His) is really not that bad!
He no longer has to imagine the sound of this piece for it now bears some semblance to how it should sound, instead of the indistinguishable blur of notes it was when i played it initially – this gives me some hope.

It is suggested i record myself once a week so notable improvements can be perceived by me this will provide some positive encouragement.

Also rather than push through the sections we have covered it is suggested to take the notes grouped in each slur and practice these separately with a break between – excellent.

As for my fingers and hand cramping, this is all very normal for these muscles have never moved in this way before are now being exercised and developed.

We review Primavera and add a few more bars to the practice session.
Note the definition of 'mordent' in the top image as given by Maestro.. i had to beg him for he was reluctant to write it in pencil above the musical notation, as it made me laugh so.. for a good deal of humour is required for learning the violin, so i'm told.

List A No 1. AMBE Second Grade, Cantabile (Jean Baptiste) Charles Dancla (1817 - 1907) edited Samuel Applebaum , was requested and as i had not practiced this for a long time stood there shocked.
To my surprise it wasn’t nearly as difficult as i imagined.
Running commentary in my head as i play – ‘gee, the Kreutzer is doing its job’.
My finger flexibility, reach and strength particularly with the 4th was very much noted by me.
I am asked to start infusing some musicality within this piece.. phrasing, dynamics, expression, sensitivity, in other words looking at making it artistically expressive.. most importantly of all - breathe!

lesson 44

A call for help via sms..

Today i had thoughts about cancelling tomorrows lesson, as my brain has turned to mush and i am not making sense of anything that was covered last week.

I've reached info overload and my fingers just aren’t working.. they cramp and are hurting for all the tension i am carrying in them whilst trying to make the notes for the K9 and K13.
I will also confess that through my frustration, from not feeling the tips of my fingers anymore, i actually cut out with cuticle scissors the calluses i have from all the practice.. so now i also have pain in the pads of my fingers where the calluses used to be!
Have no pity for this is self inflicted!

It was far from an ideal week regarding practice, and only few in my circle would know that my health and emotional state this week hampered my efforts in spending and dedicating the adequate time i feel to sounding the violin.
Despite this added challenge i do believe i have tried my best.

So the s.o.s sms went out to you know who, who then called and reassured me that all will be fine..

I know that missing lesson tomorrow will only compound matters with not grasping what was covered last week.. and really i am desperate to have a lesson reviewing everything over again.
It’s frustrating because i know i am giving this my all.

i am quite depressed over it
i am told this is normal - not the cutting out of calluses part though, for this was not mentioned in conversation but perhaps tomorrow will have to fess up!
i hope that tomorrow brings some clarity.

Thank you so much Vov for calling and setting my mind to rest, see you tomorrow.

They are part of my artistic journey.

Sharing a great deal of myself here through different mediums under this thread of music
is also a journey which i will weave into this fabric that ultimately forms me and it will stand as a record.
Some time ago i wrote the words below which i guess best describes why i am at times driven..
__________
These images along with my artworks
are some of the many strands woven together
that make up the cloth of my life so far.

Sometimes these strands are knotted, frayed and come undone,
some are like silken threads which glint in the sun.

i am not a writer..
i am not a photographer..

i am simply being me

lesson 44

I’m told to breathe, for it is VERY early days..

Developing muscles that have never moved in this way, hence the Kreutzer études will provide some training to hone this fine motor skill in my left hand so that it will become nibble-fingered and therefore fluent in playing.

Much like how physical exercise trains the body, the Kreutzer if my understanding is correct, is a fitness exercise for fingers and hand.
Start slow and build up gradually is the advice.

Unlike the K2, numbers K13 and K9 posses a new level of complexity with regard to finger movement.
I should not expect to make giant leaps forward and herein lays the frustration.

I’m somewhat like a toddler learning to develop a new skill in body to eventually become upwardly mobile. This toddler in violin, is trapped however in the mind of an already developed and demanding adult wanting and expecting to move fast forward – it seems this is an exercise in patience also.

In speaking with fellow beginner Sergio concerning progress, as we are older beginning students.. we are both discouraged at the moment for differing reasons, however this common underlying theme, one of wanting to perceive significant advancement, improvement and steps forward in learning violin is frustrating.
In support, i stressed to him that each time you pick up the instrument you make progress, however little it may be, be assured it is a step forward.. i’d best remind myself of this also.

Each time i face the music (ha!), i’m reminded of how poor i am at reading it.
Suggestions are made that i start looking at musical notation and saying/verbalising out loud the notes on the page. Relying on my hearing for the melody per se is not going to help me long term rather i should use this as a corrective tool to adjust pitch.
Naming notes ad alta voce as i play the scales, using the terms flat, sharp and natural will reinforce notes and scale structure also.
As painful as it is to admit - i know this and it is all wonderful advice thanks to Maestro adding here that i do trust in what he says.

We make a start on the long term project - Vivaldi Spring. I do like this method of approaching it in sections, the idea being to piece it together in its entirety when the time comes.

Also.. Maestro finally discovers my blog!
He tells me that perhaps he should not sit back in his chair and cross his legs to listen to me play for he reads it makes me anxious!
Not all of what transpires during lesson will be written here, but the majority of it will be. So if you are reading this now (ahem..) be warned.. hehe

The day before last during the practice of K9, i broke down and cried.. for my 3rd & 4th fingers would not move.. they cramped.. the sound was muffled.. not on pitch.. my mind set was negative but i still persisted.

I’m glad i've managed to write about lesson 44 today, i look upon this as a positive, for there has been much negative in recent days.
